What is mentoring in education
- The aim of the NMH mentor is to work with the student to recognise the barriers to learning created by the impairment.
- Also, to promote independent management of life at University, the student to develop autonomy, as well the mentor giving strategies to manage own workload especially during times of challenge, stress and transition.
- The mentor will also monitor the effectiveness of strategies, and with the student identify new ones if required.
What you can expect from mentoring
The NMH mentoring support should focus on supporting you overcome your barriers whilst you complete your academic studies. How this is achieved is via identifying barriers to your learning, and develop strategies to address them. Some of the topics that can be covered could be:
- Exploring and then identifying skills to help with management of your long-term mental health / disability whilst at university, one-to-one support to address barriers to learning.
- Exploring topics such as
- Dealing with unexpected challenges, anxiety and stress
- How to deal with concentration difficulties
- How to deal with time management challenges
- Prioritising workload and meeting deadlines via prioritisation and realistic goals
- How to ensure a suitable work-life balance.
- Looking at identification of destructive study patterns, blind spots and difficulties that you are experiencing whilst at university and to these applying problem-solving techniques
- Support with motivation and morale
- Techniques for building self-confidence
- Developing social and communication skills
- Strategies so that you can problem-solve, make decisions and test out new strategies for coping and other issues identified.
